Haiti Emergency Net

Southern Missouri Scaner is currently broadcasting the Emergency net from the Hati Earthquake ops.

This feed is the emergency net that is being operated by the International Emergency Radio Support Coalition via echolink (specialize program that links amateur radio into the web - allows for amateur radio operator to communicate via text and voice either computer to computer, radio to computer, or radio to radio - all being linked by the internet). A large majority of the station on this net are from out of the US - from all over the world - yet - nice and clear almost the same quality as listening to scanner sitting beside you.  Their is another net that is being operators by the Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network on the 80 meter ham band.

At this point - they are just trying to keep tabs on everyone, they are still trying to get aid and so forth into the country - once they have search operations well underway - and the crisis stage is over with - they will start passing health and welfare messages, taking damage reports, all that sort of stuff.  So right now - the net is in Emergency mode - standing by, and waiting to hear from HAM operators that are in country.  At this time - neither one of the nets have had any contact with any of the operators in haiti - and very limited contact with the few hams that have gotten into the country.

Kansas City, Mo. Votes for Fire Department to Take Over EMS PDF Print E-mail

The City Council voted Thursday afternoon to move control of the MAST ambulance service to the Fire Department.

The proposal to merge Kansas City's ambulance service with the Fire Department had generated a lot of controversy. The final vote on Thursday was 10-2 in favor of the move.

Metropolitan Ambulance Services Trust, a nonprofit ambulance service that has operated on its own with about $13 million in city funds, has a reputation for providing quality service.

Those who support the merger said the service could be even better. Supporters have said the move could provide stability to the city's emergency services and could save the city up to $1.8 million.

Those who oppose the move have said the city's bureaucracy could ruin MAST's quality.

Opponents said they have concerns the move is a political power grab on the part of the firefighters union, a group pushing for the merger.

Several council members had expressed concern the process is moving too quickly for something as important as ambulance service.

By a vote of 7-6 last Thursday, the council approved the move, but held off on a vote for a direct transfer until this week, to allow for public comment Thursday before the council votes.

On Friday, $1.6 million in Assistance to Firefighter Grants (AFG) was awarded to 25 fire departments within the United States.

This was the forty-fifth round of FY '08 grants awarded by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The primary goal of the Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG) is to meet the firefighting and emergency response needs of fire departments and nonaffiliated emergency medical services organizations.

Since 2001, AFG has helped firefighters and other first responders to obtain critically needed equipment, protective gear, emergency vehicles, training, and other resources needed to protect the public and emergency personnel from fire and related hazards.

The Grant Programs Directorate of the Federal Emergency Management Agency administers the grants in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration.

For fiscal year 2005, Congress reauthorized the Assistance to Firefighters Grants for an additional 5 years through 2010.
